A NEW COMMANDMENT
Today I am going to comment briefly on what Jesus said in John 13:34-35, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." My grandson, a new Pentecostal minister in Indonesia said that Jesus’ new commandment has replaced all His previous commandments. I believe that he is wrong. Why? Because Jesus has said, "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one title will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:17-20. But my grandson answered and argued that after Jesus was nailed on the cross all of His commandments have also been nailed on the cross. How many commandments did He give? I can find only one, John 13:34. All the others are the commandments that God the Father gave to Jesus to give to us. And God the Father has never died. God the Father said, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, [the] Beginning and [the] End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, The Almighty." Revelation 1:8.
Jesus had died, but God the Father has never died. God the Father and God the Son are two distinct entities.
Jesus said, "For I have not spoken on My own [authority]; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak." John 12:49-50. Do we understand what Jesus has said in John 12:49-50? Jesus said that everything that He said that is written in the first four Books in the Bible are not His words. “Whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”
